Roscoff has retained its charm of yesteryear, when its port was the most important in the region. Shaped by the sea, this “city of character” on a peninsula in the north-west of Morlaix Bay is a magnet for visitors.
Indeed, it’s hard not to fall under the spell of its historic center with its flower-filled streets, stone houses and sandy beaches.
The old port is one of the town’s must-see spots, home to the Roscoff lighthouse and nautical center.
Stroll along the quays and you’ll see ancient fortifications and cannons. From the old port, there are numerous daily ferries to theisland of Batz (approx. 15 min crossing).
In the 1970s, a marina was built not far from the old port, the Port du Bloscon. Thanks to this deep-water harbor, Roscoff can host major events such as the 54ᵉ Solitaire du Figaro in September 2023.
Since 1973 and the creation of a ferry terminal, it is now possible to reach Plymouth during your Roscoff-England crossing, Cork in Ireland or Santander in Spain from Roscoff.
Last but not least, Roscoff is a gourmet land. Roscoff PDO onions have a subtle, mildly pungent taste and a fruity aroma. It’s a popular salad ingredient. You can also try kig ha farz, a traditional recipe typical of the Pays du Léon in the Bay of Morlaix.
It’s a mixture of wheat flour-based far, vegetables and meat. Roscoff and Morlaix Bay in general also offer excellent seafood (spider crab, crab cakes, oysters, etc.).
What to do in and around Roscoff
A stroll around Roscoff allows you to browse the stores and enjoy a seafood platter on the terrace, followed by a delicious Breton crêpe! Roscoff’s exotic garden, classified as a “Remarkable Garden”, is a must-see in this Finistère town.
See over 3,000 subtropical plants from Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Roscoff is also known for its beautiful family beaches, where you can swim and relax. To take full advantage of Haut Léon‘s mosaic of landscapes, experience a hike during high tide – a change of scenery guaranteed! At low tide, it’s fishing on foot that brings all generations together.
Located opposite Roscoff, discover theisland of Batz. After a 15-minute boat ride, explore this small island, 3.5 km long and 1 km wide, on foot or by bike. Discover its 44 m-high lighthouse, the beautiful Georges Delaselle garden and beautiful beaches and coves (Sainte-Anne, Grève-Blanche, etc.).
Finally, along the coast, plan a stop at Carantec, one of the jewels of Morlaix Bay. Take the coastal path for breathtaking panoramas, and on the same route, explore Sibiril and its charming port of Moguériec.
